Butcher Block Finishes

Wood Welded Butcher Block comes standard with our proprietary Durakryl 102 finish. This offers superb durability and a rich lustrous finish. We also offer several other options. These finishes are listed below with descriptions of each.

Durakryl 102

Our standard finish is Durakryl 102

Durakryl 102 (an ultra violet cured coating) is a proprietary formulation which when cured leaves an inert film. Durakryl 102 has excellent toughness & mar resistance, excellent resistance to household chemicals, excellent moisture resistance and meets the test requirements of the Kitchen Cabinet Mfg. Assoc. (KCMA). The constituents of the cured film have been tested by an independent university laboratory and found to be non-toxic.

Since film is approximately 95% cured in the manufacturing process with 100% cure within two weeks of manufacture, only inert film is present on installed tops used as manufactured.

Since butcher block is such a versatile product our tops are used for many applications. We have had our Durakryl 102 tested to see how it reacts with many household and industrial products. The follow this link is a listing of products tested and the results of the testing. The results are listed as passed (no effect) and failed (moderate to severe effect). A moderate effect would be a softening or discoloration of the finish.

Good Stuff

Good Stuff ® is a proprietary formulation specifically designed to be both durable and easy to apply. We felt it important to offer a finish the end user could quickly and easily apply to our Butcher Block. It essentially is a gel urethane used as a finish for those times when a fabricator makes a cut on the Butcher Block or the user wishes to make touch ups to an existing block. It can even be used to completely refinish a top. It is available in Quarts, Pints and 1/4 Pints. Please read the instructions on the can for further information.

Emmet's Elixir is a special formulation of food grade Mineral Oil, Rosemary and Lemon extract and Bees Wax. This finish is an after market application and 16 oz bottles can be purchased in cases of 12 units from Michigan Maple Block Co.

The finish is designed to not only penetrate the wood but to give a surface seal of wax which prolongs the period of time between re-oils. The Rosemary and Lemon oils add an appetizing fragrance while giving a natural anti-microbial component.

Mineral Oil

Mineral Oil is the most traditional finish for a butcher block. Used for years by butchers around the world to keep their blocks in good shape. All of our cutting boards come standard with mineral oil. Countertops, island tops or workbenches can be purchased with this finish as an option. When applied, Mineral Oil seals the pores of the wood blocking the penetration of moisture. This of course extends the life of the Butcher Block. While Mineral Oil is a great finish, it does require maintenance. This is highly dependant on the environment and the amount of use the surface gets. The owner of an oiled block should be sensitive to the color and feel of the block. When the block begins to look dry the block should be re-oiled. We do NOT recommend any oil made of vegetable or animal fats. These types of oils run the risk of going rancid and can be a health issue. Mineral oil remains safe throughout its life.

Pure mineral oil can be purchased at your local drug store.

Unfinished

We are often asked to supply butcher block unfinished. Our official policy on this is that we will supply unfinished product, but we will void the warranty. The reason for this is that wood is hygroscopic. Which means it will take on and loose moisture though out its existence. A finish inhibits and evens out the movement of moisture in and out of the block, thus creating a stable butcher block. Without finish the wood will act naturally and attempt to move moisture within itself. This will create an imbalance in the block and end check and warping can and does occur. If you choose to have the butcher block shipped unfinished, please realize the quality of the block is every bit as high as our finished block. As long as a finish is applied immediately upon receipt, the block should be fine. The longer the block goes unfinished, and the greater the difference in environment, the greater the chance the block will develop problems. This is natural and is not a manufacturing defect.
